Going Deeper with this Year’s Keynote Speaker: Improving Student Outcomes and Creating the Conditions for Adult Behavior Change
- Facilitators: AJ Crabill & Greg Klein
- Location: Large Conference Breakout 1
Join this breakout to delve deeper into this year’s keynote, which confronts a simple truth — that school systems exist for only one reason: to improve student outcomes — and an equally simple barrier — that student outcomes don’t change until adult behaviors change. A challenge for school systems is twofold. First, it is essential to clarify which student outcomes to focus on and how to create the conditions for adult behavior change that will enable those outcomes to be achieved.
Second is knowing how to utilize those behaviors to align the necessary resources with those student outcome goals. AJ’s keynote draws on the stories he tells about school boards in his book, “Great On Their Behalf: Why School Boards Fail, How Yours Can Become Effective,” and the insights about behavior from his book, “Our Tools They Deserve: Why Adults Choose Retribution, How Students Can Practice Restoration.” He invites you to reimagine how schools set students up for success in the classroom and beyond, starting with rethinking how school systems measure what they value most.

From Proficiency to Growth: Sanger Unified’s Data Journey
- Facilitators: Dr. Dennis Wiechmann, Tim Lopez, Thomas Soto, & Katie Gault
- Location: Large Conference Breakout 1
When the leadership team at Sanger Unified found themselves facing a never ending data ocean and students in need of a structured plan for support, they set out on a mission to get everyone in their system aligned on a single strategic plan. Their data driven approach has afforded leadership the ability to plan for multiple years going forward and given staff the guidance they need to make decisions and commit to actions for student achievement. Rather than allowing the tides of their data to push their boat about aimlessly, the Sanger team has been actively monitoring and using their data to build a plan for their future and install guardrails to prevent future complications. All of this is done with transparency and teamwork.
