Why Listening to Students Is the First Step to Change

Incidents of racist language and harmful behavior continue to disrupt school campuses across the country. These moments don’t just sting for a second, they leave lasting harm of fear of safety and belonging, especially for Black and Brown students.

At the Measure What We Value Summit, we made a decision: to stop avoiding this issue and to face it directly. We shared a powerful video, Harmful Language, that explores the pain and impact of the n-word, calling on schools to act with courage and intention.

The response was overwhelming. Leaders asked to use this resource for professional development with their staff. They saw what many already know which is that students are living these realities every day, and schools need tools to both surface those voices and know how to take action.
