Unsilencing Student’s Languages: Creating an Ecology of Equitable & Powerful Student-Centered Schooling Part 2

For many Multilingual Learners, especially younger students, their home language and culture can sometimes feel like obstacles to fitting in. But with thoughtful policies and everyday practices, schools can show students that being bilingual is a strength. Their language and culture aren’t problems; they’re gifts.
In Part Two of this series, we’ll look at school policies and classroom practices that help students value their home language and culture. We’ll also talk about ways your school or district can remove negative experiences that may get in the way of students growing in both their home language and English, all while supporting their academic progress.
In this webinar, we’ll cover:
- How subtractive language practices affect student engagement and achievement
- Policies and practices you can start using right away
- Leadership actions that create identity-affirming opportunities for students
